Increase timeout for 'Delete Data change details older than (days)', when trimming large XDBAUDIT table

When customers have very large amounts of information inside their data audit log (i.e. when their XDBAUDIT SQL table gets very large) then the button "Delete" does not work (inside "Maintain - System Audit Log - Configuration").

Specifically:

  • The process appear to start running normally, however it will never finish

  • After some time you will receive an error message. Note: I do not have the exact error message, but it will mention a network connection error, and that it has disconnected.

=> Therefore if you do not regularly (e.g. at least every 3 months or so) trim your XDBAUDIT table, then the official IBM method will not work!

  • Instead, the only workaround is to manually trim the XDBAUDIT table (outside of the Controller GUI) by using SQL commands. However, IBM do not officially support this, which worries customers :-(

I believe that the cause of the failure (of the IBM official method) is that the SQL connection has a timeout for how long the query can take. Because the SQL query takes a long time (when you have lots of data in XDBAUDIT) the timeout is exceeded, so the job fails.

I therefore have asked IBM (via a ticket) to ask for the timeout of that button to be increased (e.g. from approx 20 minutes to perhaps 2 hours or more), so that SQL does not disconnect the session and abort the task.

Unfortunately they told me it was not a bug, but instead I should raise an enhancement request.

    we must check with Dev team how we could deal with so large numbers of rows. Its' a valid concern we would need to see how we can address it

    As an extension ('nice to haves') to my original idea, here are some extra ideas:

    • Ability to automate deleting all audit data older than X days (e.g. during a database optimise)

    • Ability to configure which actualities (e.g. AC) to keep audit data for, but destroy records from all other actualities
