Row version of math functions

Math functions in Cognos works on individual field in a column fashion. I need to use math function on a row instead. The particular functions that I'm using are aggregate and maximum but all math functions could be used in this manner. Especially that I have NULL values in the 43 different fields (and growing) I need to compare.

For the sum, I could add the coalesce value of each fields. For the maximum, I was told to do If or Case statement to compare all values but 43 different statements. Both would really be heavy and a nightmare to debug.

What I did is to convert those fields to columns in individual queries (one field to name it, another with the value, and adding the fields on which it is grouped) and union them together to perform the column version functions. This takes over 16 minutes of the 20 minutes for the total run time.

This is not currently on the roadmap due to other priorities. If more customers demand this request, we can revisit within 12-18 months.
