Change the data module used within a report without breaking the report

Reports often need to be repointed to different data sources from those that were used to create them.


Scenario 1.

For example we notice an error in a data module. In a typical production system we cant just update the live data module, we could break it or make things worse.

We take a copy of that data module and change it in order to fix the error.

In order to test the change we take a report that demonstrated the error and point it to the updated data module. After doing this we should simply be able to rerun the report to test.

However we cannot not. After changing the data module source within a report ALL of the data items in the report are now broken. As data items contain the original data module identifier and are not updated to the new data module.


Scenario 2
A business user wants to add some of their own data to an existing data module and include it in an existing report. They cannot update the original data module or report as they are production reports used by everyone.

They copy the data module and add their own data.

However they cannot simply take the existing report and point it to their enhanced data module. As all the data items in the report refer to the original data module,


With framework manager data sources a user can repoint a report to a different package and the report can easily cope with it.
