Reports should be able to save output as data set (dataset), just like HTML, Excel, PDF, CSV etc

A report should be able to save output as a data set. Run a report to a data set should be just as simple as running a report to Excel, PDF etc.

Whilst the functionality exists to create a new data set report from an existing report, this means we end up with two reports to maintain.

When running any report the option should exist to save a data set. Not all reports are really suited for creating a dataset from. So this new functionality should work just like if the user had decided to use the Excel data or XML options. That is run the first query as a list output.

We have very complicated reports/queries that users could not understand. They want to use these report outputs to create data sets. What they are doing at the moment is running the reports to excel, then uploading the excel files to Cognos to use in dashboards and so on. A very manual process.

This could be automated if there was an option to save a report output as a dataset.

Today, they would have open the report, understand how it works, copy the relevant parts to a new dataset report. They would then have to maintain this new dataset report if the original report ever changed - crazy! Hence they do the save as excel and upload, far easier.

Being a report it should be capable of being scheduled.

Limitations are that a dataset can't have output versions.

These dataset output versions should be consumable within data modules and dashboards.
