Enhancing Report Interactivity with Data-Driven Prompts

This idea involves expanding the functionality of containers like lists, crosstabs, bar charts, etc., in the reporting canvas of Cognos, enabling them to serve as dynamic data prompts. This would allow users to configure these containers to set parameters and control other elements of the report based on selections made within these containers.

Functionality Details:

  • Associating Parameters: Users should be able to associate any data item in a container with a report parameter. For example, in a list displaying Product Type, Product, and Sales, the Product Type column could be set to adjust the report parameters when a user selects an option.

  • Display and Use Value Configuration: It should be easy to configure what data item is used as the "value" (what sets the parameter) and what is displayed to the user, enhancing flexibility.

  • Selection Type Configuration: Containers should be configurable to allow single or multiple selections. In the case of multiple selections, checkboxes could be added next to each entry in the Product Type column to facilitate this functionality.

When a selection is made, related data in the report (such as details in other containers) should be updated accordingly. This should be configurable to occur with or without a full page refresh, ensuring a seamless user experience.

    Who Would Benefit:

  • Report Designers and Developers: They can build more dynamic and responsive reports without extensive backend changes.

  • Business Analysts and End Users: They gain a more intuitive and powerful tool for data analysis, capable of adjusting to complex analytical needs in real time.

This functionality would align reports to be a bit more like dashboards.

Would need some consideration to how the UI would work. Should it autosubmit? How would you multi-select without multiple autosubmits happening?

If the UI just set parameters then report authors could decide which visualisation on a page are linked to each other.
