Improvements to Custom Controls

The native custom control system makes integrating custom elements a great deal easier, but there are a few areas for improvement.

  1. Defined drop zones on the page
I would love to be able to define drop zones similar to other Cognos objects like graphs. At the moment the workaround I've found is to have the configuration include "Display Item Name", where the user has to type (or paste) in the name of the data item.
  2. Drop down query selector and item selectors
When I'm making a custom prompt, I'd like to add query, use, display, and possibly other elements to the properties page. At the same time, I'd like to be able to do this multiple times, so if I have a custom control that references multiple queries, each query might have it's own properties pane section. This would make it significantly easier for report authors. It's a similar idea to above, but different enough to have it's own list item.
  3. Update RSVP to recognize optional parameters defined in custom prompts.
At the moment a custom prompt will generate a prompt page, with the workaround being to define the parameter in the parameters pane. I tried poking around the engine a bit, and it looks like it might be a hardcoded list of recognized items.
  4. Start merging the custom control and custom visualization.
Honestly, there's not much difference between the two other than visualizations being available in dashboards and the rendering engine exporting them in outputs.

I strongly agree with number 4. Having the build tools to create visualizations extensions are great and would be so helpful for making custom controls as well. I had to create my own vite build tool to write my controls in typescript and then transpile them to javascript and upload to cognos. Having them merged would be incredibly helpful.
