Dashboard visualisation top 10 should have an option to use olympic and dense ranking

Within a dashboard, if you limit a chart to show the top 10 it uses DENSE ranking to show the top 10. Dense ranking is the most uncommon type of ranking, Olympic ranking is far more common and the usual default.

Take the following data set of Products and Sales:

  • TV, Sales 100

  • HiFi, Sales 100

  • Cameras, Sales 50

  • Batteries, Sales 25

If we asked for a top 3 most users would expect to see:
Position 1: TV & HiFi
Position 3: Cameras

TV and HiFi share the top space. as there are two products with an equal first there is no second place. This is Olympic ranking and this example the top 3 shows 3 products.

Compare this with dashboards dense Ranking. If we asked dashboards for a top 3 the results would be:

Position 1: TV
Position 1: HiFi
Position 2: Cameras
Position 3: Batteries.

This dense ranking is not what most people would expect and results in more than 3 products being shown.

(Note that in certain data sets the Olympic ranking could result in more than 3 products being sold in the top 3, but it would usually result in far less entries than dense ranking).

Dashboards should have an option to show the Top 10 using Dense Ranking and Olympic Ranking.
At the moment when a user chooses to show a Top or Bottom a small dialogue window appears that asks the user to enter the number of results: eg 3, and show Top or Bottom. This window should also include another option to use Dense or Olympic Ranking.

    Whilst it is possible for you to create your own RANK calculation and use that for Top/Bottom it shouldn't be needed for such a basic operation.
