data module – default settings for “optimization” while creating join

Current functionality: there are two ways to create a join within a data module:

Option 1: mark the two tables, right click and create join, this will cause a 1:n relationship with an “Unique values” optimization.

Option 2: select one table, use the submenu to create join => this will cause you to select the 2nd table and result in a 1:n relationship, with “no filtering” optimization.

The Option “unique values” makes only sense if the two tables are in a different databases, but not if the two tables are in the same database or different schemes on the same DB.

Cause of the RFE: The “Unique values” filter setting can cause performance issues within the preview or even a crash of the dispatcher while retrieving data, if the tables are on the same DB.

Expectation: for both join options 1 and 2:  for joining tables of same scheme in same database and also of different schemes in same database: set “no filtering” as default. For creating the join on different databases, Cognos shall set “unique” as default.
