Update CDC as to being able to replicate multibyte enabled columns without doing conversion when contained data type is single byte

RE : Case TS003082492 - December 2019

We’re replicating new files which now contains DBCS-Open data type columns. However, the contained data is single byte characters only.

CDC/IIDR insist on handling these columns as Unicode and converting data, which is a mistake. Replicated data is unreadable and useless.

If we force replication to use 1252 code page on SQL target, and switched from nvarchar to varchar, the replicated data is readable and correct.

We did a lot of tests. Only when doing replication to Varchar when specifying 1252 on target shows data properly. Every other setup fails.

When we first create a new subscription using MC, it defaults to nvarchar. Replicated data is unreadable and useless.

Then we force target encoding to 1252, and varchar, it is showing data properly.

We found a workaround, which is temporary by nature.

Which is modifying the dmirror/dmfs501p file on AS400, which contains data columns definitions.

We fix the issues by updating these parameters only on DBCS formatted columns:

Set TGTENCMTD = 3, TGTCCSID = '1252', TGTENCNME = 'Cp1252', TGTENCTYP = 1

Problem is, we have to apply these changes for every new subscription created or modified with MC.

Currently we’re installing a new ERP software which makes extensive use of SQL defined tables and DBCS-Open formatted columns.

As we need these files to be replicated, CDC/IIDR will make us work a lot more to adapt these new tables before successful replication.

    Why is it useful?

CDC/IIDR is not useful if it can't replicate modern AS400 SQL defined tables (with DBCS-Open columns), which is the current way of managing AS400 native DB2 database.
