IBM Change Data Capture High-Availability

ABN AMRO, one of the biggest IBM clients in the Netherlands, is facing a problem with CDC Software.

The discussion revolves around improving the availability of the CDC agent in a Linux-distributed environment, replicating data from a mainframe to support real-time transactions like online banking. Current challenges include downtime during CDC upgrades or maintenance, as the system requires exclusive access to critical files like the "bookmark file." This downtime disrupts customer data replication and access, which is unacceptable for near-real-time use cases.

Possible solutions discussed:

  • Addressing limitations of the bookmark file to enable seamless switching between CDC agents during upgrades.

  • Exploring alternative approaches, such as copying or synchronizing the bookmark file.

  • Leveraging high availability configuration CDC agent in a Linux-distributed environment with the bookmark file in synch on the specular machine.

The goal is to evolve the system from high availability to near-continuous availability, minimizing customer impact during maintenance while maintaining data integrity.

If we do not evolve the software as the client wishes, the amount of money IBM may lose is around 250K.
ABN AMRO stated that if IBM does not solve this problem, they may consider an alternative solution provided by Microsoft and Rocket: https://www.rocketsoftware.com/products/rocket-data-replicate-and-sync

    Thanks for filing this requirement.

We document how to achieve high availability of the CDC deployment.

We recommend filing a support case if there is a deployment question or issue.

Has the team already considered the general guidance provided in Chapter 7.5 : https://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks/pdfs/sg247941.pdf ?
