Support MySQL MEDIUMINT Data Type in IBM CDC Replication Engine for MySQL

Current Behavior

The IBM CDC Replication Engine for MySQL does not currently support the MySQL native data type MEDIUMINT.

When CDC encounters a table containing a MEDIUMINT column, replication fails with Event ID 9506, preventing the table from being replicated successfully.

Our production environment contains business-critical tables using this data type, and CDC is unable to process them even though no DDL changes are present.

Business Impact

  • MEDIUMINT is a valid native MySQL data type.

  • Many legacy MySQL applications have been using this data type for years.

  • Changing the production database schema is not feasible because:

    • The tables are shared by multiple applications.

    • Schema changes require extensive regression testing.

    • There is significant business and operational risk.

  • Customers expect IBM CDC to support all standard MySQL native data types.

Requested Enhancement

Please add support for the MySQL MEDIUMINT data type in the IBM CDC Replication Engine for MySQL.

This enhancement would:

  • Eliminate unnecessary production schema changes.

  • Improve compatibility with existing MySQL databases.

  • Reduce replication failures caused by unsupported native MySQL data types.

  • Simplify migration and onboarding of legacy MySQL environments.

Environment

  • IBM InfoSphere Data Replication (IIDR): 11.4.0.5-5813

  • Source Database: MySQL 8.x

  • Replication Engine: CDC for MySQL

This version clearly explains:

  • What is missing

  • Why it matters

  • Business impact

  • What IBM should implement

It is much more likely to receive attention from the IBM CDC development team than a brief request.
