Persistent CDC replication metrics and bookmark recovery alerts for detecting potential data gaps

CDC performance statistics are currently session-based and reset when a subscription restarts. This makes it difficult to correlate replication activity before and after a restart and proactively identify potential data gaps.

We would like CDC to provide enhanced monitoring capabilities such as:

  • Persist key replication statistics across subscription restarts.
  • Retain visibility of the last committed bookmark before a restart and the bookmark selected during recovery.
  • Generate an alert or warning when the recovery bookmark differs unexpectedly from the previous replication position.
  • Highlight unusual bookmark/time gaps following abnormal termination or heartbeat timeout events.
  • Provide persistent source-to-target operation counts, where technically feasible, to support reconciliation and identify potential discrepancies.

The objective is not to use bookmark differences alone as proof of missing data, but to use bookmark continuity together with persistent replication metrics as an early-warning mechanism that can trigger further reconciliation.

This would benefit customers operating business-critical CDC environments by helping operations teams identify potential replication inconsistencies immediately after recovery, rather than discovering missing data later through downstream applications.
