Intro: HUK came up with a requirement to use Cognos (-Analytics) Frontend as a modeling tool do define complex queries. Their use case was mostly a data preparation / ELT which is not well suited for Cognos. But they have sound knowledge performing complex analysis with Cognos and require tooling that is comfortable for business staff.
Background: Data Modules in Cognos implement a business abstraction of the underlying data, e.g. to define relationships between tables, derived attributes or meaningful names. This is of great help to prevent recurring tasks for example you define foreign key relationships once in the data model (i.e. data module) layer and you do not have to define them in each report again.
Apptoach: The idea can be summarized as follows: Make Cognos UI modeling application available on CP4D stand-alone, so that it can be used for other use cases as well. This would allow to define complex queries by business users that can be leveraged outside Cognos. In the end, this would result into a business staff ready query editor capable for complex queries and offering great reuse. This component could be used in CP4Ds Data management Console targeting Db2 or Data-Virtualization engines.
Discussion: Why we think this is not already covered by existing Data Transformation capabilities in CP4D:
- Refinery currently lacks a backing with a business abstraction model like Cognos has with Framework Manager or Data Modules. It has no means for declarative programming or reusable components.
- DataStage is far to technical for business users.
Cognos is well accepted, at the customer. They already pivoting its application in ELT using Data Sets. We want to develop this approach forward combing the powerful Data Module frontend with the right processing backbone here DV or Db2.
Side remark: The Metadata covert in data modules should also be visible in WKC for lineage
