Support Cloud Pak for Data and Watsonx.data on Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization

The customer is running Watsonx.data and Cloud Pak for Data (CP4D) on Red Hat OpenShift are increasingly looking for ways to optimize infrastructure and licensing costs. One emerging architectural approach is to deploy OpenShift on top of Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization, enabling tighter consolidation of virtual machines and containerized workloads on the same platform.

Currently, Watsonx.data, CP4D and IBM services (including watsonx.data) are officially supported only when deployed on standard Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform (OCP). There is no official support or validation for deploying CP4D on OpenShift clusters that run on OpenShift Virtualization.

This enhancement request proposes that IBM certify and support Watsonx.data and Cloud Pak for Data on Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization, enabling clients to:

  • Consolidate VM-based and container-based workloads on a single OpenShift platform
  • Reduce infrastructure footprint and associated licensing costs
  • Adopt a phased migration strategy from traditional virtualization to cloud‑native architectures

Providing formal support would allow customers to safely leverage OpenShift Virtualization while continuing to use watsonx.data and CP4D as a strategic data and AI platform.
