Remote Development Integration with IBM Bob IDE

Executive Summary

Request for official integration between IBM Bob IDE and IBM Cloud Pak for Data (CP4D) to enable seamless remote development workflows. Currently, the Microsoft Remote-SSH extension blocks connectivity when using IBM Bob (a VS Code fork), preventing users from leveraging Bob's agentic AI coding capabilities with CP4D remote environments.

Requested Functionality

Enable IBM Bob IDE to connect to and interact with IBM Cloud Pak for Data runtime environments for remote development, providing feature parity with the current VS Code remote development experience documented at: https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/cloud-paks/cp-data/5.3.x?topic=scripts-visual-studio-code

Current State

Working Components:

- Watson Studio extension functions natively (as expected, since IBM Bob is a VS Code fork)

- Successfully connect to CP4D platform (version 5.2.x)

- Can open projects without issues

- Can open instances without issues

Failing Component:

- When attempting to connect to a runtime environment, the Microsoft Remote-SSH extension fails

- Error message: "Remote-SSH is only compatible with the official Microsoft version of VS Code"

Technical Context

The compatibility issue stems from Microsoft Remote-SSH extension's explicit restriction against VS Code forks and derivative products. Since IBM Bob is a fork of Visual Studio Code, the Remote-SSH extension refuses to operate, blocking the remote development workflow.

This is a well-defined and practical request that clearly highlights a real limitation in remote development workflows, especially for users trying to leverage IBM Bob IDE with CP4D environments, and enabling compatibility similar to VS Code would significantly improve productivity and usability, plus when sharing or formatting such technical ideas online, tools like nombre invisible para instagram can also help enhance presentation.
