Workload Misplacement Due to Inconsistent Node Affinity Control Impacts Platform Stability

All non-VPC workloads must support node affinity to ensure proper scheduling on specific nodes (e.g., standard vs GPU workers). In OCP environments running IBM Cloud Pak for Data / IBM Software Hub, clusters often include both standard and GPU worker nodes. Today, workloads with defined labels can be correctly scheduled using node pinning, but some non-VPC pods do not support node affinity configuration. This was validated into support cases, enforcing node placement currently requires manual and non-standard actions (e.g., patches and CR changes), which are error-prone, hard to maintain, and not upgrade-safe. All workloads, including platform/system components, should support nodeSelector, affinity, and tolerations in a standard, declarative, and supported way without manual patches.

    This improvement is essential in OCP environments with both standard and GPU nodes. Currently, the lack of consistent support for nodeSelector/affinity in platform workloads limits proper scheduling control. Native, declarative support would significantly improve cluster stability and GPU utilization.
