Support simultaneous TM1 login across multiple separate Excel instances in PAfE

Currently, IBM Planning Analytics for Excel (PAfE) does not officially support maintaining TM1 login sessions across multiple separate Excel instances/processes simultaneously.

Historically, users were able to work across multiple separate Excel instances without issue. However, after recent Microsoft Edge WebView2 security/session handling changes, users are now logged out from the first Excel instance when connecting to TM1 from a second Excel instance.

This has impacted many users who intentionally work with multiple separate Excel instances to:

  • reduce the risk of large workbook crashes/freezing
  • isolate heavy refresh/reporting activities
  • improve Excel stability/performance
  • work across multiple monitors/screens

Example scenario:

  1. User opens Excel Instance 1 and connects to TM1
  2. User opens a completely separate Excel instance/process (ALT + open Excel)
  3. User connects to TM1 in Excel Instance 2
  4. TM1 automatically logs the user out from Excel Instance 1

IBM Support confirmed:

  • this is related to Microsoft Edge WebView2 session management/security changes
  • there is currently no supported fix/workaround
  • PAfE does not officially support simultaneous login across multiple Excel processes

Requested Enhancement:
Please enhance PAfE authentication/session management to support simultaneous TM1 connectivity across multiple separate Excel instances/processes for the same user.

Potential approaches:

  • Support shared authentication/session tokens across PAfE Excel processes
  • Implement PAfE-managed session persistence independent of WebView2 process isolation
  • Provide a configurable option/policy for multi-instance support
  • Coordinate with Microsoft WebView2 session handling where possible

Business Impact:
This impacts users who rely on multiple Excel instances for large TM1 reporting workloads and workbook stability. Previously working business workflows are no longer functioning after recent WebView2 updates.
