Integrate use of Alation's delete API in the Manta to Alation connector to export lineage.

Recent discussion with IBM and the Alation vendor has clarified what lineage is actually shown in Alation for items that we previously thought would always be showing Manta's current lineage. Relative to this topic, Alation does not have an internal method to delete old/stale versions of lineage.  At the same time lineage pushed from Manta to Alation via API call is only additive in nature. We are concerned with the possibility of old stale lineage for items that no longer exist being displayed and would like IBM to include an optional delete function to the export of lineage to ensure only the most current and accurate lineage will be displayed.

Additionally there isn't a very good way to detect if lineage is stale without an SME validating it. This idea is more of a preventative feature to stop bad information from being consumed by users that wouldn't know the information was incorrect otherwise.

    Hi Jakub,

Question about the timestamp, does that get updated every time an export is done even if the lineage itself doesn't change? E.G. if we push lineage every morning for the past 6 months but it hasn't changed will it show a date of 6 months ago or today's date?

If the timestamp doesn't update then that would make things confusing for users if they are warned old lineage could be stale. We also have some legacy code/lineage that we don't expect to change and thus don't frequently run workflow scenarios for.

If the timestamp does update then the potential issue is lessened but new/inexperienced users may not make that connection of an old timestamp meaning possibly outdated lineage. Either way I can see potential reasons to integrate a delete function.

    Thanks,

    Greg

Hello, thank you for submiting the idea.

Manta currently exports the date, on which the lineage relation was exported - see the attached screenshot. Can that be used as indicator for the users to understand the freshness of the lineage information in Alation?
