Manta should include all core types of SAP HANA views for lineage

Why it is useful?

Views are an integral part and widely used in SAP HANA applications. They comprise advanced logic describing data and hierarchies, joins, aggregations and transformations that are vital for deriving lineage. The core types of SAP HANA views are

  • Attribute Views
  • Analytic Views
  • Calculation Views (Graphical calculation views and Script-based calculation views)

Excluding the views, Manta will not gather key information for a full end-to-end data lineage from source to target of SAP HANA systems, crucial for understanding impact, troubleshooting, and governance within data platforms

Who would benefit from it ?

Business that run applications on SAP HANA systems using views to describe data movement and transformations.

How it should work ?

Manta is said to support Graphical (Tree-Based) Calculation Views and nested structures in 42.14 (DATALIN-I-138)

It catalogs and shows the views from SAP HANA databases in the Manta Flow Viewer but does not show their relation with other views, procedures or tables with respect to the lineage. The views appear as isolated components in the Flow Viewer. It does not reveal how the they are used in processing the attributes in them, therefore does not help understand the role these views play in the lineage.

Expected Behavior - Manta SAP HANA scanner should be able to parse all of the core types of views and show its relation to the other SAP HANA components. Users should see which  and how the views in SAP HANA are contributing to the lineage from its source tables (upstream) through transformations to its consumers (downstream), revealing data flow, dependencies, and changes.
