Manta support for Vizlib objects in Qlik Sense Scanner

Problem Statement

The Qlik Sense Scanner in Manta v42.14.8 currently does not support key Vizlib extensions and objects widely used in our Qlik Sense environment. Because these objects hold measures, dimensions, and variable expressions, Manta is unable to generate lineage for a significant portion of our analytics ecosystem.

Unsupported objects (Must Have)

These objects contain critical logic used to derive business metrics:

  • qlik-variable-input
  • VizlibAdvancedTextObject
  • VizlibComboChart
  • VizlibPivotTable
  • VizlibCalendar

Unsupported objects (Nice to Have)

These enhance functionality but may not directly contain metric logic:

  • action-button
  • com-qlikcookbook-ExportScript (replaced internally but still present in legacy reports)
  • VizlibButton
  • VizlibSwitch

Impact

Approximately 70% of the Bank’s Qlik Sense reports rely on Vizlib extensions—this estimate may be higher as many dashboards embed advanced KPIs, variable inputs, and custom text objects via Vizlib.

Because the "Must Have" Vizlib elements store measures, dimensions, variables, and calculation logic, Manta fails to extract:

  • Expression sources
  • Variable lineage
  • Data dependencies
  • Transformational logic inside Vizlib objects

This results in incomplete or missing lineage, which directly impacts our compliance and governance processes.

Why This Is Critical

To satisfy Governance, Compliance, and Audit requirements, the Bank must demonstrate:

  1. Where data originates
  2. How data transforms across dashboards and data layers
  3. Who consumes the data and where it flows

Without Vizlib object support, Manta’s lineage outputs are incomplete, causing:

  • Gaps in end‑to‑end lineage
  • Inability to prove compliance for regulated reports
  • Manual effort to map lineage outside of Manta
  • Reduced trust in data lineage outputs

Who Benefits

Data Governance Teams

  • Achieve complete traceability required for internal and external audits
  • Meet regulatory lineage requirements

Risk & Compliance

  • Ensure audit readiness with defensible lineage

Proposed Enhancement / How It Should Work

The Manta Qlik Sense Scanner should:

1. Parse Logic from Must‑Have Vizlib Objects

Extract the expressions, variables, dimensions, measures, and data dependencies embedded inside:

  • qlik-variable-input
  • VizlibAdvancedTextObject
  • VizlibComboChart
  • VizlibPivotTable
  • VizlibCalendar

These objects directly contain business logic that must be included in lineage.

2. Add Optional Parsing for Nice‑to‑Have Objects

These components add interaction or automation but may not contain critical expressions:

  • action-button
  • com-qlikcookbook-ExportScript
  • VizlibButton
  • VizlibSwitch

Support for these would improve completeness, especially for dashboards relying on variable-driven navigation or scripts.

3. Integrate Parsed Vizlib Logic into Standard Manta Lineage

Ensure parsed content aligns with:

  • Qlik load scripts
  • Qlik data models
  • Measures and master items
  • Variable definitions
  • Sheet objects & expressions
