Support Lineage Ingestion for Power BI Paginated Reports Using PBIDATASET Provider

Summary

Currently, Power BI Paginated Reports (created in Report Builder) that use Azure-based shared datasets (PBIDATASET provider with pbiazure://api.powerbi.com) are successfully ingested by Manta, but no upstream lineage is generated. This results in orphaned reports with no visibility into their underlying Power BI semantic models or source systems.

Manta logs indicate unsupported provider type PBIDATASET, failed automapping, and unsuccessful result merging into the lineage graph. As a result, lineage between paginated reports and their associated Power BI datasets or data sources cannot be established.

Business Impact

  • Breaks end-to-end lineage visibility for Power BI reporting ecosystems
  • Limits impact analysis and root cause investigation for paginated reports
  • Reduces trust in lineage completeness for BI and regulatory use cases
  • Creates manual effort to bridge gaps between reports and semantic models

Requested Enhancement

Add support for the PBIDATASET provider type to enable lineage extraction from Power BI Paginated Reports to:

  • Power BI semantic models (datasets)
  • Upstream data sources connected to those datasets

Additionally, enable automapping support for pbiazure://api.powerbi.com connections to resolve dataset references.

Additional Context

  • Reports use Azure-based shared datasets (PBIDATASET)
  • Current behavior results in ingestion without lineage linkage
  • No scalable workaround exists; manual solutions are not sustainable
