IBM Data Platform Ideas Portal for Customers

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against products and services offered by the IBM Data Platform organization. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas

Post ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted and upvote them if they matter to you,

  1. Post an idea

  2. Upvote ideas that matter most to you

  3. Get feedback from the IBM team to refine your idea

Manta must support lineage extraction for Snowflake stored procedures, user-defined functions (UDFs), and Snowpark processes developed in programming languages

Why is it useful ?

Snowflake is increasingly used not just for SQL transformations, but for procedural and programmatic logic via:

  • Stored Procedures [Java, Python, JavaScript]
  • User Defined Functions (UDFs) [Java, Python, JavaScript]
  • External Functions / APIs
  • Snowpark-based data transformations

These components:

  • Execute complex transformations
  • Call other tables, views, files, APIs
  • Generate intermediate datasets dynamically

Manta falls short here because it is SQL-centric and cannot parse or interpret logic written in procedural languages resulting in gaps in the lineage

Without capturing lineage from these components:

  • Data flows become partially invisible
  • Dependencies are incomplete or incorrect
  • Governance teams lack end-to-end traceability

Who would benefit from it ?

Data Governance & Compliance Teams would benefit from it with complete lineage for audits and regulatory reporting.

How it should work ?

Manta should capture lineage from code in Snowpark, Stored Procedure definitions and UDF code in programming languages - Java, Python, Javascript within the Snowflake platform.

It should detect data access patterns inside code blocks,  identify embedded SQL queries within procedural code, intermediate data structures/temp tables/variables that is relevant to build column level lineage across Inputs → transformations → outputs.
