Db2 LUW TSM incremental and/or delta backups from FlashCopy off-load server based backup

The Federal Financial Supervisory Authority of Germany (BaFin) uses the Spectrum Protect Snaphot (SPS, aka FlashCopy Manager, FCM) software to create Db2 FlashCopy Backups and to offload them to a backup system.

From this backup system are Db2 backups performed and stored to IBM Spectrum Protect (aka Tivoli Storage Manager, TSM).

However, each Db2 backup from the offload system to TSM is a full backup because incremental and/or delta backups are not supported based on a FlashCopy backup.

We have several multi terra byte Db2 databases and our growth rate per month is very high (e.g. 3 TB) and this requires longer and longer durations for backups.

Furthermore, the Db2 full backups are stored in Spectrum Protect Storage (Disk Pools) and the backup images will be later migrated to a tape library.

In other words, the storage pool migration time window is getting shorter and shorter.

It would help us significantly if we could run incremental and/or delta Db2 backups on the offload server to TSM.

    Hi. Thanks for the request. This is not something that Db2 can own, as most of the technical details would be with the storage vendor. I suggest this feature request gets opened for the storage vendor you are dealing with and if that vendor is interested in providing a solution then they will reach out to us for help in supporting this capability.
