specify index to use for particular sql statement within optimizer

We are using IBM MAS Manage. When a user clicks "All Records" under Work Order Tracking, the application issues the SQL statement SELECT * FROM WORKORDER ORDER BY REPORTDATE DESC against the IBM Db2 database.

We observed that the Db2 optimizer ignores the index defined on REPORTDATE DESC. Instead, the optimizer chooses to perform a full table scan, loading the entire WORKORDER table into the buffer pool and then performing the sort operation in memory. This behavior occurs because the current buffer pool is large enough to contain the entire WORKORDER table.

However, this approach delays the return of the first few records to the user. On systems with smaller hardware capacity and smaller buffer pools, the optimizer instead chooses to use the index, which provides faster retrieval of the initial result set.

We suggest providing a feature that allows administrators to instruct the optimizer to prefer index access for specific types of SQL statements. Alternatively, IBM MAS Manage could allow customization of the SQL statement used for the "All Records" menu to improve query performance and response time.
