Tenant support for SQL/QReplication as source and target

The Db2 tenant concept is introduced in IBM Db2 12.1 and define an isolated, unique namespace for user-defined objects within a single database.

It sits between the database instance and schema levels, allowing multiple independent groups or applications to share a single database while keeping their metadata and objects separate.

For Db2 LUW, SQL Replication and Q Replication currently support only the system tenant as both source and target.

The idea is to extend SQL and Q-Replication so that capture and apply support tenants.

This means it is possible to capture from a tenant and apply to a tenant.


This would make it possible to replicate data between tenants across Db2 LUW databases, or between tenants within a single database.

Support is to be provided for both single and DPF databases.

 

Examples of use cases include:

 

Multiple tenants within a single database.

The tenants represent different stages—for instance, development and various testing stages. With support for SQL/Q Replication, it would then be possible to replicate data.

 

Another use case is database consolidation—that is, merging multiple databases into one.

Previously, these multiple databases served as sources for a single target, such as a data warehouse.

By using tenants, database objects in each tenant can share the same name (reflecting the fact that the objects in the original separate databases had identical names).
