Real-life scenario / Problem statement
Banco do Brasil is increasingly adopting the Go programming language for the development of modern applications and services that require direct access to IBM Db2 LUW databases.
Currently, IBM does not provide an officially supported pure-Go driver for Db2 LUW. This creates a supportability gap for enterprise production workloads, since applications developed in Go require a reliable, documented, and officially supported connectivity option to Db2 LUW.
Current workaround
To address this gap, Banco do Brasil developed the open-source go-db2 driver and made it publicly available on GitHub:
https://github.com/go-db2/go-db2
The project demonstrates that native connectivity from Go applications to Db2 LUW over DRDA is technically viable using a pure-Go implementation, without requiring CGO or external native Db2 client libraries.
Although this implementation addresses the technical requirement, it is not currently validated or supported by IBM. Therefore, Banco do Brasil cannot adopt it as a fully supported strategic connectivity option for mission-critical production workloads.
Proposed enhancement
Banco do Brasil requests that IBM provide an officially supported pure-Go driver for Db2 LUW.
IBM could address this requirement by either:
Providing and maintaining an IBM-developed pure-Go Db2 LUW driver; or
Officially validating and supporting the existing open-source go-db2 driver developed by Banco do Brasil.
The implementation should provide native connectivity to Db2 LUW without requiring CGO or external native Db2 client libraries and should integrate with Go's standard database programming model (database/sql).
The supported solution should include IBM documentation covering installation, configuration, supported Db2 LUW versions, authentication and security, data type mapping, transaction handling, compatibility, and known limitations.
Benefits / Business value
An IBM-supported pure-Go Db2 LUW driver would:
- Enable Go applications to access Db2 LUW through an officially supported connectivity stack.
- Eliminate CGO and native Db2 client dependencies.
- Simplify deployment in containerized and cloud-native environments.
- Improve portability across hybrid-cloud environments.
- Reduce operational and support risks associated with community-only database drivers.
- Facilitate application modernization while preserving Db2 LUW as a strategic enterprise database platform.
This capability would also strengthen the Db2 developer ecosystem for Go-based microservices, APIs, cloud-native applications, and other modern application architectures.
Users impacted / Frequency
This requirement impacts Banco do Brasil development teams building Go-based applications and services that access Db2 LUW. The capability is required whenever these applications establish or manage database connectivity and therefore represents a recurring production requirement rather than a one-time development need.
Banco do Brasil is a major IBM Db2 customer operating Db2 in enterprise and mission-critical environments. The bank has already invested engineering resources to address this product gap through the development and public release of the go-db2 project, demonstrating both an existing customer requirement and the technical feasibility of the requested capability.
