Reorg Utility Progress data is missing in db2 list utilities and db2 list utilities show detail command

The db2 list utilties and db2 list utilities show detail command will not display the Reorg utility progress.

1) The command will display the Runstats progress details for the table

2) The command will display the Load progress details for the table

3) The command will display the Backup progress details for the database

4) The command will display the Restore details for the database

So it is good even if it displays the Reorg progress details with different phases it is operating . It should display the clear phases with which it is operating both offline Reorg and Inplace Reorg.

Monitoring reorgs of large tables is done by most customers. When maintenance windows are tight it is imperitive to have a good estimate of progress.

This helps in making decisions to continue or abort a reorg based on time constraints. Updating users with an accurate estimate as to when the table will be avaialble again or at least the current progress will also be very welcome

I think it would be wonderful if, like on DB2 for Z/Os platform with the command -DIS UTIL(*), will be introduced a single command (db2 list utilities) able to show progress of all utilities. For the moment, reorg isn't included in the utilities managed by db2 list utilities command and adding it will be a great feature.

Well this is something all DB2 DBA's miss I believe. Reorg is one of the most crucial utility and most important as it affects performance of database. so knowing about reorg progress phase wise could let DBA to decide and plan ahead of time, in crucial time bound environments.

Having details about progress is quite crucial to make proper decisions, we have the details on z/OS but of course presentation could be improved as well ;-)

yes this is one of the necessary monitoring indicator on db2 list utilities the progress and status should be shown details @partition level. also it should be shown for all types of tables wherever REORG applicable. the progress should details like type of reorg (offline / online) , stages of the Reorg , table partition , percentage of completion, status@table partition level and operations start & end timelines. currently we are able to provide the ETA for reorg operation. Basically enough details should be displayed to arrive the ETA for reorg operation.

This a great idea and this is very much indeed required for the DBA's to watch the progression and make appropriate decisions.

It's very good idea ..we have to found the status of reorgs in db2top and and db2pd also. but If its show's utilities we can observe how much % of completed work, so it will help to plan for further plans for next activities and also useful to share ETA to app team.

Reorg times can vary hugely. Having a progress indicator is crucial.

Any database, no matter whether DB2 or not, should provide mechanisms to track processes and sessions that are performing some activity within the database. Mainly a reorg activity that requires an exclusive lock on the table as soon as it finishes, as well as aborting the process when it's ending after hours running with high system resources costs. This option/feature is optimal and mandatory.

Apart from db2 list utilities will show active backup, restore, import.

I would suggest to use db2top -d <dbname> to check the percentange for reorgs.

Here Reorg is something which acts like a bridge and clear the fragmented space for physical use of pages and helps in data clustering. So reorg monitoring is kept under db2pd utility. Reorgs can be restricted at some point (Sort ,build) however if it extents to a level it won't be in our control(like rebuilding, recreate index phase in offline reorg). We can pause and start the reorgs whereas backup, restoration, runstats can't be stopped once it is triggered. Restoration, Backup , runstats once it is triggered it can't be controlled untill it is completed.

This is a good idea and something that we've been able to do when reorging on z/OS for a long time.

Good idea! It would be very useful to monitor the reorg progress through this option.

Good idea! It will give the client the security that the reorg process is not hitting an issues and if it does, react immediately.

This is a key requirement to ensure necessary reorgs can be executed and monitored within customer agreed maintenance windows to avoid critical business system impact for the client.
