Externalisation of Real-Time-Statistics before REORGs dynamic sort space allocation

See this idea on ideas.ibm.com

During our maintenance in the night we use the DSNACCOX suggestions for automated REORGs. These REORGs are using the dynamic allocation of SORT Space. However, these allocation is based on the externalized RTS of the related tablespace. Some of our tables are very volatile and are emptied and filled every night within a few minutes. Therefore, it is can happen that the RTS values (especially the totalrows count) are too low and the REORG abends due to insufficient sort space.

My idea would be, analogely to the RUNSTATS (https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/db2-for-zos/13?topic=statistics-how-runstats-affects-real-time#db2z_runstatsrealtimestats__currentinmem), to externalize the RTS of the objects in the REORG (maybe also during UTILINIT phase?) before the dynamic sort space allocation takes place.

Dear Florian, Thank you for submitting this Aha idea. Today, Db2 Utilities rely heavily on RTS for resource calculation, including the subject scenario when REORG estimates how big sort work data sets for dynamic allocation. Existing utilities logic would externalize the RTS stats at run time right before they are retrieved and used for the internal resource calculation. So this functionality already exists and there is no need to rely on the user or the system daemon to drive RTS externalization before utilities use it. This behavior is true for REORG and any utilities that needs to retrieve RTS statistics. Hope this clarifies the existing behavior. Many thanks.

    Sincerely,

    Db2 Utilities team
