Reduce restrictions of ADD PARTITION

“ALTER TABLE ADD PARTITION” is not available when target table holds uncommitted(not materialized) definition change. In most cases “MAXVALUE” is selected as limit key value because Partitioned-Table of TABLE-CONTROL cannot hold data exceeded the limit key value which is specified in the LIMITKEY in the last PARTITION. Therefore, it’s necessary to change the limit key value in advance of adding new PARTITION key after the last key at that moment, though, a record may be discarded after REORG depending on the situation. The correct procedure, we assume, is that change the limit key value first, complete REORG, add PARTITIOIN key and LOAD discarded record. However, this procedure is too many steps and too complicated to proceed in our daily operation.

We suggest that ADD_PARTITION should be able to be executed even for a table in AREOR status. Alternatively, changing the validation routine for data consistency to run at predetermined timing or after REORG (as same as [DB24ZOS-I-1765]) also contribute to improve the effectiveness.

We suspect that the function of inserting PARTITION has been implemented to solve this issue, however, it’s not applicable as for the solution since discrepancy of logical identifier and physical identifier may cause of getting the process more complicated.

Hello, Thank you for submitting this enhancement request. Our Db2 for z/OS development team reviewed it and provided the following feedback:

This requirement is related to DB24ZOS-I-1765. If user can change taking the advantage of capability of stacking of pending and REORG support stated in Aha DB24ZOS-I-1765, customer can convert UTS PBR -> UTS PBG -> UTS PBR RPN.

    Through the process, user can

Redefines the partition limit key for each partition

Can change all the limit key value in one ALTER statement

    NPI index remains the same

Most table space attributes carry over from the original table spaces

Note: If PI or DPSI is needed, it needs to be recreated

One REORG materialized all the pending changes

    Sincerely,

    The Db2 for z/OS team
