Distribute Db2 Connect “unlimited” license artefacts in a huge environment via z/OS or Db2 for z/OS tooling instead of db2connectactivate.sh

The documented way to “install” a Db2 Connect unlimited license in a Db2 for z/OS system or data sharing group is db2connectactivate.sh. To activate Db2 Connect unlimited for a huge number of Db2 for z/OS systems, a central LUW (or USS) instance would be required which can connect to all Db2 for z/OS systems via IP. This includes authentication, firewall setup, etc.

A much easier way would be to install the Db2 Connect unlimited license once into one Db2 for z/OS system with db2connectactivate.sh, and then distribute the resulting artefacts (DBRM, SP, package) from there via z/OS or Db2 for z/OS tooling into all other Db2 for z/OS subsystems. Preferred method would be a tooling, which could be called within a z/OS batch job and use the Db2 for z/OS to Db2 for z/OS connection definitions of the communication database (CDB) in Db2 for z/OS.

This would be straight forward for the Db2 for z/OS sysprogs, does not require IP connectivity, remote authentication, etc. Tools like Db2 Admin Tool or vendor tools can do the extraction today. A first test was successful.
This idea suggests to document and officially support the procedure to install Db2 Connect unlimited once with db2connectactivate.sh, and then distribute the resulting artefacts like SYSIBM.DB2CON_LIC / DB2LIC.SYSLIC with z/OS or Db2 for z/OS standard tools.

This would eliminate the need to run db2connectactivate.sh for each and every Db2 for z/OS system / group.
With todays supported and documented procedure, Db2 Connect unlimited is not manageable and no option in huge environments. The consequence is, that Db2 Connect licenses will furthermore have to be managed in app servers and remote apps.

    Hello Sueli,
I am fine with IBM moving this idea to the correct workspace. In the end it is just important, that it is reviewed by the people, who can make a good and correct assessment
    Best regards
    Frank

    Hello Frank,
Thanks for submitting this requirement. We have discussed your requirement and it lands at Db2 Connect which owns db2connectactivate.sh.
I have asked to the administrator to move it to that workspace. Let me know if you would prefer to open a new one under that label.
    Sincerely,
    Db2 for z/OS Development
