REORG utility does not fix UNLOAD and RELOAD task relation

In case of ALTER LIMITKEY the UNLOAD and RELOAD task fix relation could end up in the fact that REORG can use only one task for UNLOAD and hence one task for RELOAD.

This impacts REORG utility performance. In our case one UNLOAD/RELOAD task versus multiple UNLOAD/RELOAD task is 5 hours to 1 hour.

For details refer to case TS020840034 in which the details are explained.

    Dear Peter Hartman,

Thank you for submitting this Db2 for z/OS enhancement request (REORG parallelism during unload/reload when materializing ALTERs). We have reviewed this request and believe it is a good candidate for the Db2 for z/OS product. However, we have discussed it and the conclusion is that the problem here is ALTER LIMITKEY. If you alter the limitkey between part 1 and 2, then both of those parts will be assigned the same subtask since rows are moving between the parts. That is WAD. It follows then that in the DATEV case where they alter limitkey for all 2048 parts, they will get no parallelism because theoretically data from part 1 could move to part 2048. Your recommendation to them remains true. We have a plan to help with this that the new REORG utility owner is working on, which will at least allow us to parallelize the unloads, but no timeline for it yet. Since it's not going to be in the next 12 months, we are marking this as not under consideration at this time but indicating that a development project exists to address this issue in the future.

    Sincerely,
    Db2 for z/OS Team
