We are a large multi system multi SYSPLEX environment with a minimum of 5 9's uptime availability across the board. Therefore, we normally do not upgrade anything across all LPAR'S of a SYSPLEX at the same time and certainly do not take down all of any given service. Today, the way UMS/ADF deployment works requires all tasks to come down, a process run to 'alter' dataset contents (such as new DBRM/updated DBRM as we ran into once) and make changes to the WORKSPACE directory content. As I understand things, the prior release/PTF are incompatible with these changes and required a 'fallback' (restore) of at a minimum the WORKSPACE.
We would like some though put into providing 24x7 365 patching/upgrade capability. Ideally something as close as possible to:
SMP APPLY new PTF/Release
Update system symbols to point to new MVS datasets and Unix file systems (mount point accessed by way of a dynamic SYMLINK that uses the system symbol to get to the 'real' mount point for the SMP/E delivered code)
IPL the system (one or multiple).
ALL DONE.

Sorry, I forgot to add that for this to have the desired benefit it would need to include Zowe so that the Zowe task could also tolerate different levels of Zowe code on different LPAR's and eliminated the need for the Zowe tasks to come down on the 'other' LPAR (especially once HA is working in our environment).
