IBM Data Platform Ideas Portal for Customers

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against products and services offered by the IBM Data Platform organization. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Add new behavior to REORG TEMPLATE STACK to take advantage of parallel processing for PBR/PBG at partition level while using ICLIMIT_TAPE

LISTDEF REO11002
INCLUDE TABLESPACE DRATEEM1.SEMHNSA PARTLEVEL(549:551) PBR NPSI
ICLIMIT_TAPE 2
PARALLEL (30)

STACK NO behavior
There will be no UNLOAD/RELOAD parallelism due to STACK YES being on the TEMPLATE for the Image Copy even though ICLIMIT_TAPE 2 is present. For large partition or more partitions being reorged this can increase the elapsed time.

STACK YES behavior
In the example above, this would provide UNLOAD/RELOAD parallelism across 2 drives. This is what a DBA wants, 2 tape drives, 2 tape volumes minimal.

Using the following LISTDEF illustrates a major issue when using TAPE when this is in the same step. SEMHST1 will use 2 tape drive and 2 volumes minimal. The REO12002 LISTDEF will use 2 tape drives but a different tape volume for each PBG. This will only use 1 tape drive, but will use 6 Tape volumes. This can bring a system to it's knees.

LISTDEF REO11002
INCLUDE TABLESPACE DREGREM1.SEMHST1 PARTLEVEL(551:552)

LISTDEF REO12002
INCLUDE TABLESPACE DREGRLP1.SLPLZ1E
INCLUDE TABLESPACE DREGRPEP.SPEPACH
INCLUDE TABLESPACE DREGRPEP.SPEPCSC
INCLUDE TABLESPACE DREGRPEP.SPEPNAP
INCLUDE TABLESPACE DREGRPEP.SPEPTDF
INCLUDE TABLESPACE DREGRPT1.SPTCCGC

Enhanced Stack

Using the LISTDEFs above the PBR would use 2 tape drives and 2 volumes at a minimum. The PBG would use 1 tape drive and 1 tape volume at a minimum. Using this enhanced method should also work on the following.

LISTDEF REO11002
INCLUDE TABLESPACE DREGREM1.SEMHST1 PARTLEVEL(551:552)
INCLUDE TABLESPACE DREGRLP1.SLPLZ1E
INCLUDE TABLESPACE DREGRPEP.SPEPACH
INCLUDE TABLESPACE DREGRPEP.SPEPCSC
INCLUDE TABLESPACE DREGRPEP.SPEPNAP
INCLUDE TABLESPACE DREGRPEP.SPEPTDF
INCLUDE TABLESPACE DREGRPT1.SPTCCGC
INCLUDE TABLESPACE DREGREM1.SEMHST2 PARTLEVEL(5,6,9)

This would allow the DBA to use unload/load parallelism without worrying about using excessive tape volumes. We use DB2 Automation Tool to generate the REORG jobs weekly
