Allow TEMPLATE switching for more data sets in REORG and LOAD

Allow TEMPLATE switching in the REORG TABLESPACE, REORG INDEX and LOAD utilities for the necessary work files. For example, small objects may only require data sets with DSNTYPE BASIC and large objects may require data sets with DSNTYPE EXTREQ or may require using tape instead of DASD. This would allow use of generic control cards for many different objects and reduce the need to micro manage data set parameters.

This would also be useful with LISTDEF processing when there is mix of small and large objects. For example REORG INDEX with LISTDEF may require a WORKDDN data set of 50 cylinders for one object and 20,000 cylinders for another object. The larger object will need to use DSNTYPE EXTREQ or may need to be directed to a tape dataset.

The data sets in the following utilities would benefit from TEMPLATE switching.

REORG TABLESPACE: UNLDDN (SYSREC), DISCARDDN (SYSDISC), WORKDDN (SYSUT1)

REORG INDEX: WORKDDN (SYSUT1)

LOAD: ERRDDN (SYSERR), MAPDDN (SYSMAP), DISCARDDN (SYSDISC), WORKDDN (SYSUT1, SORTOUT)

Dear Stephen, Thank you for submitting this Aha! Idea. The Db2 for z/OS development team has provided feedback, below:

Template switching today is supported only for image copy datasets. A number of the work datasets that are referred to in this requirement are ones which development would rather remove the need for altogether instead of supporting switching of them between tape and disk. For example, SYSUT1 for REORG INDEX is now no longer needed, an enhancement which simplifies the utility and greatly improves overall performance. For this reason there are no plans to deliver the requested capability.

Therefore, unfortunately, we have marked this idea as Not under consideration.

We do hope you will continue to submit your enhancement suggestions to us as we review and consider each and every one as potential candidates for product improvement.

    Sincerely,

The Db2 for z/OS Development Team
