IBM Data and AI Ideas Portal for Customers

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against products and services offered by the IBM Data & AI organization. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Reorg Index functionality should allow parallel partition processing of a multi-part selection as per Reorg Tablespace.

It is best practice to minimise the exposure of mission critical application workload to the impact of reorg drain activity.

It is best practice to minimise the cpu, i/o and elapse time of database maintenance activity which is often restricted to a constrained utility scheduling window.

In short – Customers have reason to ONLY reorg tablespace/index partitions that need it.

Reorg index functionality is currently limited to reorg a single indexpart or an entire index.

This functionality is poor – it leads to serial processing of individual partitions, or perhaps wacky job scheduling to run individual partition jobs in parallel.

When reorging an entire index the recent NOSYSUT1 functionality now parallel processes the indexparts.

The ability to reorg a whole index with partition parallelism does not sit well with the impact of reorging partitions that DID NOT NEED IT

Reorg Tablespace List will parallel process multiple partitions of the same object and limit parallelism with the LISTPARTS clause.

Reorg Tablespace db.ts PART(1,5:9,144) offers similar partition parallelism but without the same LISTPARTS control of parallelism.

This functionality has greatly simplified reorg job JCL and job scheduling.

Please include the same parallel processing, LISTPARTS, and partition selection functionality from Reorg Tablespace in Reorg Index.

Dear Rick, Thank you for submitting this Db2 Utilities Suite for z/OS enhancement request. After careful review and consideration, development has provided their feedback as follows:

While this is the next most logical enhancement to the REORG INDEX utility, it is declined on the main reason that development cannot contain this effort within a reasonable time frame due to other committed work in the current roadmap.

We appreciate your input to the Db2 Utilities Suite for z/OS development team. And we hope that you will continue to submit enhancement suggestions for improvements as customer feedback is a key component to shaping the future direction of Db2 Utilities Suite for z/OS.

    Sincerely,

The Db2 Utilities Suite for z/OS team
