Access to SQL Performance Analyzer from CAE (Web Client)

If you use Db2 Query Monitor on TSO/ISPF and your company owns Db2 SQL Performance Analyzer(SQL PA), you can call SQL PA to “explain” the access path for the query. And, optionally, perform what-if analysis. Let’s have the same functionality for the CAE(Consolidation and Analysis Engine), also known as the Web Client. Allow Web Client users to perform “explain” using SQL PA.

Today, you can set up an Action in CAE on an alert. This Action will wrap up the SQL statement, submit the batch job for you, and display the output. This is only available on an alert. The connection to SQL PA is handled by a batch job and works well. For Db2 Query Monitor on TSO, you can either export the query or enter PA next to the SQL statement to call SQL PA. Have the same setup in the Web Client. Allow the user to enter PA next to the SQL statement. This will wrap up the SQL statement, submit the batch job, and then display the sysout to the user, which contains the various explain reports.

In the near future, Db2 Query Monitor will have an “explain” option to connect to the Admin Foundation product, via Zowe. If you are on a web client, it makes sense to stay with an explain function such as Admin Foundation. But for those users who have SQL PA, they know how the tool works, what report they wish to see, and maybe they don’t have Zowe and/or Admin Foundation setup, SQL PA would be a welcome option.
