Enable an integrated log viewing and analysis UI within IBM Cloud Pak for Business Automation (CP4BA) SaaS, allowing users to search, filter, and analyze application logs in real time without requiring manual downloads.

Current Limitation

In the CP4BA SaaS platform, application logs are hosted and managed within IBM’s infrastructure. While the platform provides the ability to download logs for a specified time range, there is currently no built-in UI for log viewing or analysis within the SaaS portal.

This results in several operational challenges:

  • Logs must be manually downloaded and analyzed externally, leading to delays.
  • Troubleshooting requires context switching between tools, reducing efficiency.
  • There is no visibility into:
    • When an issue started
    • Patterns or recurring failures
    • Correlation between events across components

Additionally, the platform lacks:

  • Log filtering by timeframe, severity, or error type
  • Search capability within logs
  • Real-time or near-real-time log streaming
  • Visualization for identifying trends or anomalies

Impact

This limitation significantly affects incident management and root cause analysis, especially in production environments:

  • Increased mean time to resolution (MTTR)
  • Delayed identification of critical failures
  • Reduced operational efficiency for support and DevOps teams
  • Difficulty in proactive monitoring and trend analysis

Proposed Enhancement

Introduce a native log analytics capability within the CP4BA SaaS portal, with the following features:

✅ Core Features

  • Embedded log viewer dashboard
  • Search and filter logs by:
    • Time range
    • Log level (ERROR, WARN, INFO, DEBUG)
    • Service/component
  • Real-time log streaming (or near real-time updates)

✅ Advanced Capabilities

  • Correlation of logs across services/components
  • Timeline-based visualization to identify issue onset
  • Pattern detection for recurring errors
  • Ability to bookmark/share queries for team collaboration

✅ Optional Enhancements

  • Integration with observability tools (e.g., IBM Instana, Elastic, Grafana)
  • Alerting based on log patterns or thresholds
  • Export capabilities for reports/analysis

Expected Benefits

  • Faster troubleshooting and root cause identification
  • Reduced dependency on external tools
  • Improved user experience and operational efficiency
  • Enhanced observability within CP4BA SaaS
