read-only role in Cloud Pak for Data (CP4D) for monitoring purposes

Implementing a read-only role in Cloud Pak for Data (CP4D) for monitoring purposes is a best practice for several key reasons:

Security and Least Privilege

A read-only role adheres to the principle of least privilege, ensuring that monitoring users and tools can access system health information, logs, and metrics without the ability to modify configurations, data, or workloads. This greatly reduces the risk of accidental changes or unauthorized actions.

Operational Safety

Monitoring activities should never impact platform stability. By limiting access to read-only permissions, we eliminate the possibility of unintended changes to services, projects, or resources during troubleshooting, diagnostics, or audits.

Audit and Compliance

Many compliance and regulatory frameworks require separation of duties. A dedicated read-only monitoring role clearly distinguishes administrators and operators from observers, simplifying audits, improving governance, and making access reviews more defensible.

Purpose of the Read-Only Role

The primary objective of this role is to provide visibility without modification capabilities, allowing users to:

  • Access and review logs and metrics within CP4D
  • Monitor DataGate synchronization from source systems to Db2
  • Verify the status of synced tables
  • Review DataGate and Db2 logs to quickly identify and investigate errors when a table synchronization fails

This approach ensures effective monitoring and faster issue diagnosis while maintaining security, stability, and compliance across the platform.
