CBR (Context‑Based Restrictions) Feature in IBM Data Intelligence (watsonx.data)

In IBM Data Intelligence / watsonx.data, CBR (Context‑Based Restrictions) is a security and governance feature provided by IBM Cloud IAM that adds an extra layer of access control beyond roles and permissions.

Context‑Based Restrictions (CBR) restrict access to IBM Cloud services based on the context of the access request, such as:

  • Network location (IP range, VPC)
  • Endpoint type (public / private)
  • API vs UI access

For IBM watsonx.data (Data Intelligence), CBR can be applied to:

  • UI access
  • REST APIs
  • Data operations
  • Metadata services

Access is allowed only if:

  1. IAM role allows it AND
  2. CBR rule conditions are satisfied
