IBM Data Platform Ideas Portal for Customers
Hide about this portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against products and services offered by the IBM Data Platform organization. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas

Post ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted and upvote them if they matter to you,

  1. Post an idea

Credentials Management in Projects, Insert-to-Code, and Project-lib

See this idea on ideas.ibm.com

The Watson Studio Notebook user interface allows you to insert code snippets and credentials for data connections and data assets into your notebook code.

The problem is that it puts usernames and passwords in cleartext into the code even if you had no other way of retrieving or knowing the credentials.

Example 1: Watson Studio sets up a Service ID with access privileges to Cloud Object Storage. In most interactions with Watson Studio / Watson Knowledge Catalog you will never see those credentials since they are used in the background completely transparent to the end user. Access to Watson Studio / Watson Knowledge Catalog is granted to the individual personal user id (e.g. Bob). As soon as Bob has access to Watson Studio with notebooks activated Bob can retrieve username and password of the service ID of Watson Studio used for Cloud Object Storage and Bob can use those credentials to access the data in Cloud Object Storage from everywhere in the world until the service id credentials are revoked or reset.

Example 2: When you create a connection to a DB2 database in Watson Studio it stores the username and password and the connection is automatically shared with all collaborators in the project. Let's say Alice sets up access to data source X and creates the data connection with her intranet credentials. Bob is a collaborator in the same project. Bob can now create a Watson Studio Project and insert the credentials of Alice in cleartext in his notebook and can impersonate Alice against every w3id enabled application until Alice's w3id is revoked or reset.

Comments from Thomas Schaeck, Distinguished Engineer, Watson Studio, received via E-Mail:

Notebook code and libs used in it do need to pass the actual credentials to databases and COS to be able to access data,
but we now allow to use the Project library to dynamically look up credentials so that the actual credentials don't have to be inlined in notebook code anymore.
To make the Project library work, the project admin needs to create a project token that can be used inside a notebook by the Project library to dynamically look up Connection info and credentials instead of embedding the credentials in code cells in the notebook.
We're looking to make this more elegant in the future so that it could work without requiring the manual creation of the project token by the project admin and so that insert-to-code can then support inserting code using the project lib for dynamic look ups, but as we need to near term focus on Watson Studio One Cloud readyness inclusing moving from CF to Armada for June and deploying to more regions, this will still remain on our backlog for a while.
