IBM Data and AI Ideas Portal for Customers

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Post your ideas

Post ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted and upvote them if they matter to you,

  1. Post an idea

  2. Upvote ideas that matter most to you

  3. Get feedback from the IBM team to refine your idea

Help IBM prioritize your ideas and requests

The IBM team may need your help to refine the ideas so they may ask for more information or feedback. The product management team will then decide if they can begin working on your idea. If they can start during the next development cycle, they will put the idea on the priority list. Each team at IBM works on a different schedule, where some ideas can be implemented right away, others may be placed on a different schedule.

Receive notification on the decision

Some ideas can be implemented at IBM, while others may not fit within the development plans for the product. In either case, the team will let you know as soon as possible. In some cases, we may be able to find alternatives for ideas which cannot be implemented in a reasonable time.

Provide DDL of assets when analyze phase of automated discovery fails.

When analyze phase of automated discovery fails, providing DDL of assets helps users to understand and/or troubleshoot the issue. For example, a view assets could not be accessed for data anymore when some of its dependency table is not available. Without info about the asset type and DDL, it is hard for an ICP4D user to understand why analyze phase could fail due to a non-existing table which user does not even select for analyze.

Sample reproduction steps:

In Db2 source:
db2 "create view a_view as (select * from TEST_TABLE)"
db2 "rename table TEST_TABLE to TEST_TABLE_renamed"

Select A_VIEW as a table asset for Automated Discovery, it fails with the following error message about TEST_TABLE rather than about A_VIEW itself:
"name": "Column analysis {ec1481df.fee6c3ac.0oona7b3o.bsvocn3.3c1vd6.u5us6htsp6c5u38fh4146}",
"message": "DataStage job failed. Check the log for more details.\nDataStage job log:\nEntry 26: main_program: Fatal Error: The connector received an error from the driver. The reported error is: \n[SQLSTATE 56098] DB2 SQL Error: SQLCODE=-727, SQLSTATE=56098, SQLERRMC=3;-204;42704;DB2INST1.TEST_TABLE, DRIVER=3.71.22\n[SQLSTATE 56098] DB2 SQL Error: SQLCODE=-727, SQLSTATE=56098, SQLERRMC=3;-204;42704;DB2INST1.TEST_TABLE, DRIVER=3.71.22.\n",
"jobLog": [],
"elapsedTime": 15619,
"status": "failed"

    Got it, thanks @weiren! This explainability improvement is something that we'll look to improve in the next generation of discovery

    ICP4D could indicate the asset is not an actual table, but rather something else, e.g. a view or an alias etc, and provide a way to show asset's DDL, in this example, it would be
    "create view a_view as (select * from TEST_TABLE)"

    Thanks for your idea Weiren! Can you provide the ideal error message in the case that you outlined above? Thanks
