In the IBM Information Knowledge Catalog (IKC) tool, it is possible to leverage data classes to link glossary terms. However, not all assets (such as columns) have data classes assigned, which makes it necessary to implement an automated mechanism, such as using regular expressions (regex), to classify business terms more effectively.
Another important point concerns business terms applied to tables. In this case, data classes do not work because they are specifically designed for column classification.
Practical example to illustrate the issue:
Imagine we have two different columns:
Both contain ID numbers (personal identifiers), so a standard data class for ID will flag both columns as “ID.”
If we use this classification to link glossary terms, the same business term would be applied to both columns, which is incorrect.
Why? Because from a business perspective, Employee ID and Customer ID represent different concepts and should have distinct terms in the glossary.
This example shows that simply using data classes is not enough to ensure the correct association of business terms. An additional mechanism is needed that considers semantic context (for example, column name, table name, or specific rules) to apply the correct term.
