IBM Data Platform Ideas Portal for Customers

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against products and services offered by the IBM Data Platform organization. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Request for enhancement of DataStage AWS Redshift connector(S3)

Currently the Redshift connector, when using the “Load” option, writes data to objects in S3 corresponding to the number of partitions the job is running with. For high data volume jobs, this can lead to very large Avro files being written. Some of the files in high volume data jobs currently exceed 25G-35G in size for each of the partition objects. AWS recommends keeping the size of each Avro file being used in a COPY command to be between 1M and 1G in size and the total number of files to be a multiple of the number of slices in the cluster (https://docs.aws.amazon.com/redshift/latest/dg/t_splitting-data-files.html).

We would like to request an enhancement to allow for splitting the Avro files up by size, to maximize the parallelization that the COPY command can take advantage of. Originally the parameter part size would split the files based on the setting, but currently the stage does not do this. The request would be to either allow the part size to start splitting files when the size is reached or to create another parameter to accomplish the same results.

Please find this IBM case (TS022882268) as reference for earlier discussions on this idea.
