unable to update an existing column with varchar definition.

a column defined as varchar returns an error "no more extents" when tried to update. Work around is tedious as we need to unload millions of records, then reload it again.

    If you set MAX_FILL_DATA_PAGES to 1 you should also set PFSC=1 and PFSC_BOOST=1 to improve the caching of free slots in variable length tables. Otherwise setting MAX_FILL_DATA_PAGES can slow down inserts to tables that experience many updates and deletes.

    Try setting this to fit more rows on each page:

    onmode -wf MAX_FILL_DATA_PAGES=1
