Sort data calculations should not be used to determine number of passes for UPDATE STATISTICS MEDIUM/HIGH statements where an index is used, fix misleading explain output

UPDATE STATISTICS MEDIUM/HIGH can be used with an explain option.

The explain file always shows a sort data calculation which then determines the number of table scans (passes) the database engine will undertake.

These are calculated before any decision the engine makes about whether to:

  1. use indices for sort;

  2. or scan the table, write to temporary files and sort these

to produce a distribution.

Even when indices will be used for sort and the sort data calculation is therefore irrelevant, it still influences the number of passes.

When indices are used for sorting other more appropriate criteria should be used to determine the number of passes and any parallelism. The explain output should also be improved not to display any information about sort data in this situation. This is misleading for users.
