Add a File Size column to the knowledge documents list

Currently, in Knowledge → Manage knowledge → Documents, the interface lists all uploaded files but does not show their file size, even though the size is already returned by the backend API (file_size field inside each document’s metadata).

Displaying the file size directly in the UI provides multiple benefits:

Why it is useful

  • Helps users quickly spot unusually large files that may affect ingestion or indexing time.

  • Allows quality control of the knowledge base by identifying oversized PDFs, images, or improperly exported documents.

  • Avoids needing to manually inspect files individually or check the network panel to know their size.

Who benefits

  • AI solution developers and integrators who manage large knowledge bases.

  • Enterprise customers onboarding large document sets.

  • IBM internal support teams when diagnosing ingestion issues.

How it should work

  • Add a new “File size” column to the table in the Knowledge → Documents view.

  • Retrieve the value from the existing backend API response (e.g. /knowledge/.../documents), where metadata already contains file_size.

  • Display the value in KB or MB, with automatic formatting.

  • Optionally add sorting by size.

This enhancement improves usability, reduces troubleshooting time, and makes the UI consistent with the information that IBM Orchestrate already exposes programmatically.
