Centrally manage hiding databases users don't have access to

Whilst you can hide databases in PAW and PAfE, they do appear to be separate solutions and not joined up.

Furthermore, it doesn't allow for a centrally managed solution. I would like the option to dynamically hide databases that users aren't secured to access or have the ability to hide databases on a user by user basis governed by the administrator. I would like one place for managing database visibility across both PAW and PAfE.

Pain points / impact

Lots of users seem to attempt to login to databases that they aren't secured to access. It therefore populates each of those users into the users dimension thereby making it harder to audit the list of users who have access to the database. It also causes confusion when users login and see no cubes because they have selected the wrong database.

Workaround

Within PAfE, the workaround is to hide the databases then use a central deployment method of pushing out PAfE including a customised config file that hides it. This is not so dynamic especially if one user changes roles and now you need to update their config file to show a new database they are now allowed to see.

Updated status to 'Future consideration'. The IBM Planning Analytics team is planning to add a user capabilities system in Planning Analytics Workspace in 2024. We are already planning on support for some capabilities to be implemented 'per database'. A capability that can be used to filter out specific databases for users will be considered.

The Planning Analytics team is also examining the current security model with TM1 v12 (the version of TM1 on the new Planning Analytics SaaS offering). It is possible to extend the security model to only show databases to a user where the user has been added to the database.
