Consistent Set Behavior in PAfE: Enable Dropdown for Unnamed Sets Too

Dear IBM Planning Analytics Team,

I wanted to share feedback on an inconsistent behavior in PAfE reports regarding sets, which affects usability for many users.

Current Behavior:

  • For a named set, clicking a cell directly shows a dropdown list of elements for quick selection.
  • For an unnamed set, you must double-click to open the set editor and manually replace the element. This treats it more like a static list than a true set.

This difference leads to confusion, as users (including me, my colleagues, and our customers) don't perceive unnamed sets as fundamentally different from named ones – a set should behave like a set, regardless of naming.

Supporting Details from Documentation and Support: Here's a quick explanation of the observed behavior, confirmed by the IBM support team:

################
https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/planning-analytics/2.1.0?topic=functions-subnm
“When you click a cell containing a SUBNM function that references a set, a drop-down arrow is displayed. Click the down arrow to select a different member from the set. This feature is available when you are logged on to a data source that contains the dimension.” From this, we can confirm that the behavior you’re seeing is expected. The drop‑down only appears when the SUBNM function references a set. An unsaved subset, however, is treated as a simple list rather than a set, so the arrow won’t show up. ################

Proposed Enhancement: Please consider extending the dropdown functionality to unnamed sets as well. This small change would:

  • Streamline report editing and dynamic analyses.
  • Reduce clicks and frustration in everyday workflows.
  • Align with user expectations for consistent set handling.

We'd greatly appreciate it if this could be prioritized or added to the roadmap. Happy to provide more details or test a prototype!

Thanks in advance for considering this.

Best regards,

Vitalij
