Gestures when working with widgets in books should align with other applications

In applications like Excel, Powerpoint etc. if you are working with shapes, images etc. you can drag them around by clicking the object then dragging.

Using various key combinations in addition to dragging allows you to get a range of outcomes:

  • Holding Ctrl + drag will allow you to duplicate

  • Holding Shift + drag will try enforce a fixed X or Y axis whilst dragging to ensure that the top or left of the object does not vary/move as you drag.

  • Holding Ctrl + Shift whilst dragging will duplicate and keep the same plane

Additionally when resizing objects using the drag and key combinations are also useful:

  • Ctrl + resize will keep symmetry whilst resizing, growing essentially from the inside outward

  • Shift + resize will keep the aspect ratio when dragging the corners to avoid squishing or stretching

  • Alt + resize allows fine resizing rather than snapping to grid

Maybe right-click dragging gestures could be incorporated too.

Incorporating these enhancements would certainly reduce time working with widgets and trying to keep them aligned, correctly sized etc.

The alignment tool is great but often moves items off the snap-to-grid intervals and you need to move objects after aligning.

Being able to do this "naturally" like we do in other applications will go a long way to improving the UX.
