Title: Support MDX-Based Default Member Selection with Book Synchronization in Planning Analytics Workspace (PAW)

Problem Statement / Real-Life Scenario:

Our organization uses role-based reporting in PAW, where each user is automatically assigned a default Entity through a lookup cube based on TI process. The Entity selector is driven by an MDX subset that dynamically returns the appropriate default Entity based on the logged-in user.

The report is designed as a PAW Book containing multiple tabs. Users expect two capabilities:

  1. The report should open with their assigned default Entity.
  2. Any Entity selection change made in one tab should automatically synchronize across all tabs within the Book.

Currently, these requirements cannot be achieved simultaneously. When Book Synchronization is disabled, the MDX-based default Entity works correctly, but users must manually update the Entity selection on every tab. When Book Synchronization is enabled, synchronization works correctly, but the user-specific default Entity is ignored and PAW instead displays the last saved Entity selection from the report.

Pain Points:

  • Users do not see their assigned default Entity when opening reports (With Book synchronization).
  • Users can unknowingly review or update data for an incorrect Entity.
  • Report usability and user experience are impacted.
  • Additional training and support are required to explain the behavior.
  • Organizations must choose between synchronized navigation and dynamic user-specific defaults, even though both features are needed together.

Current Workaround:

Currently, we must either:

  • Disable Book Synchronization to preserve MDX-driven default selections, requiring users to manually select Entities on each tab, or
  • Enable Book Synchronization and accept that the report opens with the last saved Entity rather than the user-specific default Entity.

Neither option fully meets business requirements.

Proposed Enhancement:

Allow Book Synchronization and MDX-based default member selection to coexist.

Suggested behavior:

  • When a report is opened, PAW should first evaluate the MDX subset and apply the user-specific default Entity.
  • Once the default Entity is established, Book Synchronization should synchronize that selection across all tabs and synchronized widgets.
  • Optionally, provide a configuration setting that allows administrators to choose whether synchronized books should initialize from:
    • MDX/Subset default selection, or
    • Last saved synchronized selection.

Business Benefits / Value:

  • Improves user experience by automatically opening reports in the correct business context.
  • Reduces risk of users viewing or entering data against incorrect Entities.
  • Supports role-based reporting and security-driven report designs.
  • Eliminates manual navigation and repetitive Entity selection across tabs.
  • Enables organizations to fully leverage both dynamic subsets and Book Synchronization features together.
  • Reduces support effort and end-user confusion.

Users Impacted:

Approximately all business users accessing these synchronized reports are impacted.

Frequency of Impact:

The issue occurs every time a user opens a synchronized PAW Book that relies on MDX-driven default Entity selection. This affects users on a daily basis as part of normal planning, reporting, and analysis activities.
